Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LVII - Margaux

January 8, 2020

My winter has been soundtracked by Margaux as she takes those gloomy Seattle skies and turns them into stunning arrangements of love so good you want to make up the moments you miss by even blinking. Her debut EP ‘More Brilliant Is the Hand That Throws the Coin’ is a melting pot of all the soft bends and sharp twists you navigate as a heavy-hearted twenty something, and as someone who is currently caught up in a whirlwind of mixed emotions and overthinking, this record is everything I’ve ever needed. There are all the subtleties of grunge layered into her classic indie rock sound, her airy and voice floating above the occasional upright bass and sinking percussion. My favorite track ‘Faced with Fire’ pulls at every single one of my heartstrings, lyrics so raw and familiar I am brought to my knees. Lyrics like ‘Darling I’ve no other idea, you’re my only idea, love can make a one track mind’ ringing reminiscent of words I have written in my own journal on nights where I'm trying to make sense of it all. How my mind can be so full of us that every time I put pen to paper you pour out in every drop of ink? How I can be so overwhelmed with doubt but still holding on to the last bit of the glimmering and golden hope? These songs have let me find a sort of solace in the fact that I wear my heart on my sleeve, reminding me of the sheer courage it takes to be soft, and the bravery it takes to be vulnerable.
